By: Hack Back CIC and International Women’s Day. Hack Back CIC celebrates its first birthday and International Women’s Day with fantastic news. The Cheshire based social enterprise which uses a combination of interaction with birds of prey and therapeutic techniques has had amazing feedback about its pioneering programme working with vulnerable women. The project was run by a team of women including female psychologists, female support workers, a female falconer and believe it or not with only female Birds of Prey. This is perhaps more unusual as falconry is considered a traditionally male activity. The women who attended, all reported improvements as a result of taking part in the programme. Improvements included higher self-esteem, greater confidence and an ability to cope with problems better. Director Anita Morris a psychologist and visiting lecturer at LJMU said “each of the sessions the women attended covered a different topic all aimed at improving well-being, but delivered in a fun and exciting way. Our ladies would start wanting to handle something small like a Barn Owl, but ended up wanting to get up close and personal with some of the bigger birds such as our White-Tailed Sea Eagle. The sense of achievement really impacted on the women and the great thing is the impact is being sustained”. The results of the pilot project mean that the organisation can now put in bids for funding to expand the project. “We couldn’t do our work without the support of funders and especially Cheshire Falconry, who have been fantastic in helping us get the company and the pilot off the ground”.
