Citybuzz Marketing’s Interview Tips

Manchester, UK, March - Follow these steps to help you act — and speak — with power.

Practice. Practice answering interview questions and practice your responses to the typical job interview questions and answers most employers ask. Think of actual examples you can use to describe your skills. Providing evidence of your successes is a great way to promote your candidacy.

Dress for Interview Success. It is better to be overdressed than underdressed. The first impression you can make a big difference. The first judgement an interviewer makes is going to be based on how you look and what you are wearing so dress appropriately for a job interview.

Print out your CV. Take multiple copies to the interview. You can’t assume that everyone you meet will have your CV handy, so make sure that you have copies of it ready for anyone you might encounter throughout the interview process.

Presence. Sit and stand straight. The evidence shows that body language is correlated with salary and with being perceived as a leader. You should lean forward and exude as much presence as you can. Don’t put your arms in front of your chest or cave your shoulders in or slouch—all of which make it seem as if you are retreating.

Be On Time. On time means five to ten minutes early. If need be, take some time to drive to the interview location ahead of time so you know exactly where you are going and how long it will take to get there.

Stay Calm. During the job interview try to relax and stay as calm possible. Take a moment to regroup. Maintain eye contact with the interviewer. Listen to the entire question before you answer and pay attention - you will be embarrassed if you forget the question!

Eye Contact. Looking away conveys that you have something to hide, that you aren’t being honest or straightforward. Looking at people directly signals truthfulness and also that you are not “afraid” of them.

Answer the question that is asked of you. Don’t stray off topic and babble about unrelated areas. Show that you’re focused on the task at hand and engaged in the conversation. Better to have a short answer that’s on point, than an in–depth one that is off topic.

Show that you’re in it for a career and not a job. Most people just want a job. They want to be employed and get paid. Show the recruiter that you’re looking for a career. You want to become a part of the culture, of the company, of a team. You want to be there through good and bad and support the people around you.

Say thank you. Once the interview is over, thank the interviewer for their time and thank any administrative staff on your way out. Manners go a long way. Just keep it short and sweet.
