March 7, 2013 - PRLog -- Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae, also known as CRE, are a family of germs that are difficult to treat because they have high levels of resistance to antibiotics.  According to new figures released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 4% of acute care hospitals and 18% of long-term acute care hospitals in the United States reported at least one case of CRE last year. The data is based on the CDC’s analysis of 3,900 hospitals from the first half of last year.  This new information has infection control professionals on alert and Dr. Tom Frieden, CDC Director, was quoted saying, “CRE are nightmare bacteria.”

Dr. Arjun Srinivasan, CDC’s Associate Director for Healthcare-Associated Prevention Programs stated, “The message that we’re trying to send is there’s an opportunity here.”  Dr. Srinivasan went on to report, “It’s an uncommon issue, but it’s concerning. There’s an opportunity to act while it’s still uncommon.”

A new weapon in the fight against CRE and other dangerous pathogens is ultraviolet germicidal irradiation technology developed by UltraViolet Device, Inc. (UVDI).  Last year, the company introduced the V-360° UV Room Sanitizer to the healthcare sector. The V-360° UV Room Sanitizer generates high intensity UV energy and quickly disinfects surfaces contaminated with viruses, bacteria and fungi, including superbugs that cause illness and infection.

“UVDI’s V-360° Room Sanitizer provides proven UV disinfection technology aimed at decreasing hospital–associated infections,” stated Ashish Mathur, Ph.D., Director of Technology at UVDI.  “Recent clinical studies at Lee Memorial Health Systems in Fort Meyers, Florida, demonstrated superior surface disinfection with the V-360 UV Room Sanitizer when compared to current disinfectant cleaning protocols.  UV light technology offers infection control professionals a powerful new option in the fight against HAIs.”
