March 7, 2013 - PRLog -- The season to aerate your lawn is fast approaching. This signals the best time to do lawn aeration. Let not the lawn aeration season pass your lawn by as it may be the one thing your lawn needs the most.

Lawn aeration requires not just a set of tips and tricks, it also requires the perfect timing. Here in Northern California where lawns are made of warm season grass, the best time to do lawn aeration is somewhere from late spring to early summer. Warm-season turf types of grass which dominate most Northern California lawns include Bahia grass, Bermuda grass, Centipede grass, Buffalo grass, Zoysia grass and St. Augustine grass.

Why must lawn aeration be done in late spring to early summer? This time range is when warm season grasses begin their active growth phase, so that the holes you create during aeration will be rapidly filled up by new growth.

You will know your lawn needs aeration when it looks ugly even though it seems you’re trying all your best to water, fertilize and mow it. You see when the soil is compacted, dry and hard, no amount of watering and fertilizing will help it. Water will simply run off on the surface and not get to the roots. Same thing with fertilizers.

What happens underneath the ground is just as horrible. The roots of your lawn grasses cannot spread themselves as deeply and as widely as they should simply because the soil is hard and dry. No wonder the grass is not healthy –  which is the very reason why it does not look beautiful. Only a healthy lawn looks beautiful.

The way to bring back the life and aesthetic appeal of your lawn is to do lawn aeration. And the best method of doing lawn aeration is by coring. Coring or core aeration is done by removing substantial plugs of soil from the lawn and leaving behind holes which are half an inch to a quarter of an inch in diameter. Holes of these sizes would serve as channels through which oxygen, water and nutrients could work their way to nourish the soil and the roots. Core aeration also serves to loosen up the soil and make them absorbent.

Let us return to the topic as to why lawn aeration should best be done in late spring to early summer. Remember that when you do lawn aeration, your lawn would initially look pock-marked with gaping holes. Though unsightly at first, they will quickly be filled up with new growth if you did the aeration during the peak growth phase of your grass which, in the case of warm season grasses, coincides with late spring to early summer. If done during their slow growth period, it would take a long time for the holes to be overgrown with grass.

If you have a lawn which has lost its appeal and you desperately want to bring its glory back, you’re just in time to book for a late spring to early summer lawn aeration treatment for your lawn. Your lawn will love it. And you will love your lawn.
