The Social Media Town Hall, sponsored by the Stone Mountain-Lithonia Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, was held at Miller Grove High School and brought in over 125 attendees from area middle schools, high schools, and the community at large.
The goal of the Social Media Town Hall was to leave parents and their children with information and resources to help them become more responsible digital citizens.
Elana Winfrey, Creator & Results Strategist at SilverBridge Social Media stressed the importance of choosing a personal “message” when communicating on social media. Attendees were provided with case studies and examples of how social media messages have helped and hurt users; with the intention of leaving attendees inspired to be more responsible, while embracing the power of online social networks.
Panelists from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, DeKalb County Police Special Victims Unit, DeKalb County Schools Technology Department, and Chic-fi-la Talent Acquisition also provided valuable information. Attendees heard, first-hand from top-level legal official and decision makers, about how negative social media messages and images can affect college admission and job acquisition. The Town Hall was moderated by David Huddleston of WSB-TV Channel 2 in Atlanta.
