A Night of Music Celebrating Cannonball Adderley

The Beehive Hosts Evening Dedicated To Hard Bop Era Legend Cannonball Adderley

March 6, 2013 - PRLog -- WHAT:             On Wednesday, March 20th, 2013, The Beehive, located in Boston, MA, presents a tribute to alto saxophonist Julian “Cannonball” Adderley and his signature upbeat sound with great cuisine, libations and live entertainment. Join The Beehive as trumpet player Greg Hopkins takes the stage to pay homage to Cannonball, a forerunner in the hard bop jazz genre.
Most remembered for his 1966 hit, “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy,” Adderley was known for bringing loose, melodic bebop lines to every tune he played. In addition to being called the Cannonball, he was dubbed “New Bird” for his ability to improvise long, fast and bouncy melodies that rivaled fellow saxophonist Charlie Parker. While Cannonball initially played along other jazz impresarios like Coltrane and Davis, he eventually carved out his musical path to play soulful, hard bop jazz in his own quintet.
The spirit of Cannonball will flood The Beehive at 8:00PM as current musical force, Greg Hopkins, honors the jazz great and his signature sound with a powerful and jubilant set until 12:00AM. Hopkins has been playing for 35 years and has performed with some of the most notable musicians in history, including Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Stan Getz, Stevie Wonder, Tony Bennett, the Supremes, Burt Bacharach, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Marvin Gaye and Buddy Rich. In addition to being an accomplished performer, composer and arranger, Hopkins has been a Professor of Jazz Composition at Berklee College of Music since 1974. He has developed and teaches several courses in composition and also directs the Berklee Concert Jazz Orchestra, one of the most prestigious performing ensembles at the school. When he’s not teaching, Hopkins works with his 16 Piece Jazz Orchestra, and also performs regularly with his quintet and the Tim Ray trio.
The night’s music will be complemented by the culinary contributions of Executive Chef Rebecca Newell from 5:00PM-12:00AM. Guests are welcome for a full dinner, or to choose from The Beehive’s collection of cocktails and snacks at the bar while they enjoy the show. No matter what you do, don’t miss this chance to celebrate one of the most extraordinary artists of the 20th century!
