March 6, 2013 - PRLog -- Burlington, ON  – The Canadian Federation of Junior Leagues (CFJL) is a group of five Canadian Junior Leagues located in Halifax, Toronto, Hamilton-Burlington, Calgary and Edmonton. These Leagues are also members of the Association of Junior Leagues International and part of the 293 Leagues across the United States, Canada, Mexico and the United Kingdom.

The CFJL in support of their on-going work and in celebration of International Women’s Day will host screenings of the award winning documentary Miss Representation in several cities.  The documentary written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. The film challenges the media’s limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions.

Junior Leagues in Canada have a combined membership of more than one thousand women and since the first League was created in 1912 have collectively contributed more than 5.8 million hours of volunteer service and distributed more than $12 million in funding back to their communities.  Today efforts are focused on improving communities, developing the potential of women and promoting voluntarism in the areas of healthy and active living; children, youth and families at risk; poverty and developing young women.

Look for a viewing of Miss Representation hosted by a local Junior League in your area and join the CFJL in celebrating International Women’s Day 2013 and support its theme, The Gender Agenda:  Gaining Momentum.  Screenings to take place in, Halifax on March 8th, Toronto on March 20th, screenings have already taken place in Calgary on February 25th  and Edmonton on March 1st .
