Follow on Google News | Around the Rings Launches Golden 25 for Women - Presented by Ernst & Young(Atlanta) – The first Around the Rings’ Golden 25 for Women will launch Friday, March 8, in conjunction with International Women’s Day.
The list is sponsored by Ernst & Young as a reflection of its commitment to building a leadership network of female Olympians and elite athletes and then connecting this network to top women leaders in all sectors. “There is absolutely no question that sport can provide a good training ground for female leaders in sport, business and government,” The list includes women from all areas of Olympic sport: members of the IOC, athletes, National Olympic Committees and organizing committees, among others. The series is introduced Thursday, March 7, with a look at women in sport by ATR’s European Editor Mark Bisson. The first woman to be recognized on the ATR Golden 25 for Women will be announced at 9 a.m. ET Friday, March 8. Two women will be announced every day after that, at 9:00 a.m. ET and 4:00 p.m. ET. The series will conclude on March 20. “We’re excited about being able to spotlight important women in the Olympic Movement,” ATR editor Ed Hula explained. “Too often men get all the attention. This is a great opportunity for some high-profile as well as less-recognized sports leaders to take their places in the spotlight.” E&Y says female Olympians and elite athletes have unique sets of attributes to offer to the world after they retire from sport. The qualities that have made them successful on the field of play have “tremendous value for businesses like ours, governments, and NGOs around the world.” The Around the Rings Golden 25 for Women is an extension of ATR’s Golden 25, since 1997 the only annual ranking of the most influential personalities in the Olympic Movement for the year ahead. International Women’s Day has been celebrated worldwide for more than 100 years; Friday is a national holiday in more than two dozen countries. “The paucity of women in leadership roles in the world of Olympic sport is staggering,” Of the 101 members of the International Olympic Committee, only 21 are women Of more than 200 NOCs, only 10 have women presidents None of the three Olympic organizing committees are headed by women Only three of the 33 Olympic sport federations are headed by women “On the plus side, women serve as secretaries general at nearly 20 NOCs and at five Olympic sport federations. All three 2020 bid cities have women serving in key roles. It’s entirely possible that at least one serious contender for the next IOC president will be a woman,” she continued.
