SGS Awarded Seismic Qualification of Equipment Contract for Nuclear Power Plant by LATECH in Korea

SGS was assigned a contract to conduct seismic qualification of equipment for nuclear power plant by LATECH in Korea.

March 6, 2013 - PRLog -- SGS was awarded a contract to provide seismic qualification of nuclear power plant transformers to be installed in a Korean power plant by LATECH Corporation in February 2013.

LATECH (http://www.la-tech.co.kr/) is a Korean leader in the field of programmable logic controllers (PLC) used for automation of electromechanical processes and distributed control systems (DCS) used in a variety of industries to monitor and control distributed equipment designed for HVAC LIG vessels and nuclear power plants.

SGS Earthquake Testing Services

On the first of April, 2010, SGS began conducting earthquake testing (http://www.sgs.com/%7E/media/Global/Documents/Case%20Studies/SGS-IND-Earthquake-A4-EN-11.ashx) (http://www.sgs.com/~/media/Global/Documents/Case%20Studies/SGS-IND-Earthquake-A4-EN-11.ashx) on nuclear power plant products and components, electrical communication equipment and railway systems in its Korean laboratory in response to growing demand for seismic testing worldwide.

One of only a very few companies in the world offering earthquake testing services, SGS holds the distinction of the only private testing company of its kind in Korea.

Located in Giheung, the laboratory has been specifically designed to perform all types of earthquake tests on samples of nuclear power plant products and components, electrical communication equipment and railway systems (http://www.sgs.com/en/Logistics/Transportation/Rail.aspx) (http://www.sgs.com/en/Logistics/Transportation/Rail.aspx) not exceeding a maximum weight of three thousand kg and maximal dimensions of 2500(W)x2500(D)x3000(H) mm.

During earthquake testing SGS experts measure displacement and bolt strain in the test samples and conduct performance checks and structural integrity evaluations. Furthermore, SGS specialists check the overall performance of a sample, mount it on testing equipment and perform a resonance search in the course of the thirty-minute testing period. Then, the SGS team of inspectors conducts earthquake testing in accordance with the IEEE 344, IEC 60068-2-57, IEC 60068-3-3 and NEBS (GR-63 CORE) international standards, identifies resonance levels and repeats performance checks.

In this project, SGS will adhere to the IEEE 344 international standard, “Recommended Practice for Seismic Qualification of Class 1E Equipment for Nuclear Power Generating Stations”, which provides recommended practices for establishing procedures yielding data to demonstrate that the Class 1E equipment fulfills performance requirements. These recommended practices may be used to establish tests, analyses or experienced based evaluations to prove performance claims or to evaluate and verify devices or assemblies performance as part of an overall qualification effort.

SGS will provide LATECH a test report which includes analyzed data such as Required Response Spectrum (RRS), Test Response Spectrum (TRS), frequency and acceleration measurements, a performance checklist and resonance search data after completing earthquake testing at the Korean power plant. Moreover, SGS experts will issue measured data for the displacement of the sample, calibration reports for the testing equipment, measuring equipment, accelerometers and sensors as well as final test results.

Accredited by the Korea Laboratory Accreditation Scheme (KOLAS), the SGS laboratory conducts earthquake tests compliant to IEC international standards and provides earthquake testing services for both local and international clients. One of only a very few of its kind in the world and the singular testing services provider to use three-axis shake tables for earthquake simulation, the SGS laboratory is rapidly meeting the demands for earthquake tests among its affiliates around the world.

SGS is proud to participate in this important project protecting the safety and well-being of the Korean people.
