Quilt Artist Louise Silk Takes On Etsy

Louise Silk of SilkQuilt brings her unique memory quilt products to the public through the online retail craft site Etsy.

March 5, 2013 - PRLog -- From her home-based studio on the south side of Pittsburgh, Louise Silk skillfully constructs all kinds of personal clothing and textiles into fresh new products. She creatively transforms t-shirts, clothing, ties, and wedding dresses, into quilts, wall hangings, pillows, shawls, baby quilts or carryall which she entitles Memory Quilts. These become meaningful and functional gifts to celebrate any number of special occasion and lifecycle events.

Marketing has always been a challenge for Louise. It helps that she has many satisfied customers who have returned for additional commissions over the years and also spread the word about her skills onto their friends, but how might she make herself known outside this small circle of success?

The answer comes through Etsy, the retail craft website, where home-based artists, like Louise, can participate in a people-powered ecosystem of individual web-stores of commerce. Since Etsy opened its doors in 2005, more than 14 million shoppers have purchased more than 100 million items. Last year, Etsy, added 10 million new members, nearly doubling the total number of members to 22 million in nearly 200 countries around the world.

Etsy encourages the use of all kinds of social media to open communication and create genuine dialogue including blogs, emails and facebook connections to personally touch customers who will favorite, treasure and purchase the work.

SilkQuilt’s Etsy Store now offers everything from hankies, to totes, to one-of-a-kind articles of clothing. There are finished quilts available for same day shipment and individually handcrafted custom products made to client’s specifications. She has even used the store to include some of her original self-published writing.

Louise Silk, founder of SilkQuilt, resides and works in Pittsburgh, PA. For over forty years she has been creating art that celebrates the loving and healing capacity of spirit. She began making Memory Quilts when she personally experienced the transformational healing power resident in the process of selecting, cutting and re-stitching clothing into quilts to mourn the loss of her parents.

She is the author of “Tent of Protection” published by lulu.com and "The Quilting Path: A Guide to Spiritual Discovery through Fabric, Thread, and Kabbalah." published by SkyLightPaths Publishing.
