“It’s unfortunate $85 Billion in automatic federal spending cuts started March 2, 2013,” said Phil Johncock, grant writer of 26 years, Grant Professor for 21 years and lead trainer with GrantsConference.com.

To put this in perspective, $85 Billion in cuts is more than the grand total of grant funding given annually by foundations ($41.67 Billion), corporations (14.55 Billion), and individual bequests ($24.41 Billion).

"What makes matters worse is that deep cuts take place so fast, in 7 rather than 12 months. This means the effective reductions are actually approximately 9% from non-defense (mainly nonprofits) and 13 percent for defense programs,” Johncock added. “At least one funder and I were very surprised to see that Sequestration 2013 was not averted during the 11th hour."

While specifics of the cuts are being worked out, fear is palpable, impact widespread. Tens of thousands of working adults will be furloughed to save money or lose their jobs completely. Hundreds of thousands of young children, mentally ill, women and children, disadvantaged, special education and special populations will no longer have services they need to overcome major life obstacles.

“I know what people are going through,” Johncock said. “One of the hardest things I ever had to do in my life is tell 3,000 newly legalized immigrants and 27 teachers that they no longer had classes or jobs. It was not enough to be an award-winning, nationally-recognized program. When the $2.5 million in Federal grant funding cuts came along, we downsized. It was painful. But, it brought stakeholders together in a unique way that couldn’t have happened in any other way.”

“People are social animals,” added Vincent L. Hyman, author of the booklet: “Finding The Opportunity In Economic Chaos.” “In times of crisis, we need to be heard, and we need information and reassurance.” The free Sequestration-to-Sustainability webinar on Friday, March 8 provides an overview of the Sequestration Transparency Act of 2013, proposed budget cuts, and how to stay informed as cutbacks unfold.

“Keep Listening and Keep Talking,” advised Hyman. “Use every tool you’ve got: e-mail, listservs, your website, Twitter, Facebook YouTube, newsletters, mail, podcasts, webinars, conference calls, forums, focus groups, surveys.”

Fortunately, every cloud, it is said, has a silver lining. This webinar will also include responses to cutbacks and sustainability planning.

Webinar attendees will hear a case study how $500,000/year in cuts resulted in lessons learned and a 100% sustainability rate in subsequent grant-funded programs. Attendees will also learn 5 emergency responses nonprofits should become familiar with, 4 opportunities hidden within economic crisis, 3 cutback strategies, 2 case studies in closing down, and 1 list of resources.

While this webinar focuses specifically on Sequestration 2013 cuts, the information is relevant to all nonprofits, schools and government agencies who receive federal grant funding.
