Walmart Foundation donates $25,000 to One Community One Goal

Walmart Foundation has just given the Beacon Council a $25,000 donation in support of their One Community One Goal (OCOG) initiative in order to continue supporting the communities in which Walmart serves.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - Mar. 4, 2013 - (Miami, FL - Feb., 27, 2013) - The Beacon Council, Miami-Dade County's official economic development partnership, is pleased to announce a $25,000 charitable donation from Walmart Foundation to the The Beacon Council Foundation in support of One Community One Goal (OCOG). The donation will help support the OCOG initiative to build a diversified economy and bring higher paying jobs to Miami-Dade County.

“Our support of One Community One Goal is in line with our focus on helping bring career opportunities to the communities we serve,” said Steven Restivo, Senior Director of Community Affairs at Walmart. “We are proud to add this initiative as one of the many community programs we support throughout South Florida.”

The OCOG initiative kicked off last May after two years of research and four reports were compiled detailing the industries that had the greatest opportunity not only to grow in Miami-Dade County but to provide better-skilled, higher paying jobs. The initiative has rallied leaders from business, education, and government in support of a focused plan to spark economic growth in Miami-Dade County.

“Thanks to the Walmart Foundation for their generous support of the One Community One Goal initiative,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor and OCOG Co-Chair Carlos A. Gimenez. “Their contribution to this important cause will help us meet our aim of diversifying the local economy and bringing high-paying jobs to our community.”

American Airlines Executive Art Torno and Baptist Health South Florida Executive George W. Foyo also serve as OCOG Co-Chairs.

“We are grateful to Walmart Foundation for the donation and for Walmart’s job-generating investment in our community,” said Frank R. Nero, President and CEO of The Beacon Council. “They understand how critical OCOG is to our local economy.”

Walmart currently operates 12 stores and employs more than 5,000 people in Miami-Dade County. The company currently has plans for 14 new or expanded stores across South Florida over the next two years, creating at least 2,600 new jobs in the tri-county area.
