Toledo, OH—March 1, 2013. On Friday, March 15th, 20 North Gallery opens the exhibit “Intersections:
These recent paintings of Abner Hershberger continue to explore, through a visually poetic aesthetic, the rich field patterns, crossroads and markings of the Midwest. The work reflects the stark delineations of furrowed land, stubble fields and patterns of cultivation and irrigation. Although abstracted, the paintings deftly document a sense of the diverse, intense and surprising color combinations found in nature. The most recent series of his work, “Intersection,” incorporates brightly painted wood elements, providing a low-relief sculptural dimension joined to the flat canvas surfaces— his first foray in which 2D and 3D elements are combined in the same work, expressing both interests.
Abner Hershberger (Goshen, Indiana) serves as Professor Emeritus of Art at Goshen College, having taught there since 1962 after receiving his BA from Goshen in 1960. He also holds an MAT (1965) from Bloomington University in Indiana and an MFA (1970) from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He has taught painting and printmaking workshops at colleges and universities throughout the United States and Europe and is a frequent lecturer at the Midwest Museum of American Art in Elkhart, Indiana. 20 North Gallery and Abner Hershberger will be welcoming friends and collectors at the free Opening Reception on Friday, March 15th, from 6 - 9p.m. Reception attendees can enjoy light refreshments and conversations with the artist while viewing his work available for sale.
