SonoSite’s M-Turbo® lends a hand to BSSH in Sierra Leone

PRLog (Press Release) - Mar. 1, 2013 - SonoSite’s loan of an M-Turbo® hand-carried ultrasound system proved a real benefit for a BSSH (The British Society for Surgery of the Hand) team visiting Sierra Leone. The volunteer team, which included anaesthetist Dr Zul Hanafiah from the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, spent two weeks performing reconstructive hand surgery for old injuries at the Holy Spirit Hospital, a Catholic hospital in the Northern region of Sierra Leone. Zul explained: “BSSH works throughout West Africa, offering walk-in reconstructive surgery for old injuries, some of which may have gone untreated for several years. Teams from the UK, each specialising in a particular type of surgery, travel to local hospitals and spend several intensive weeks triaging and treating patients from the local area.”

“I knew that access to a point-of-care ultrasound instrument would be hugely beneficial for this type of work so, once my trip had been confirmed, I approached our local SonoSite representative. It improved both the efficiency and duration of blocks, both for regional anaesthesia and post operative pain relief, giving me complete confidence in the exact location of each injection. We were working under difficult conditions, often without assistance, but the ease of use and robust nature of the M-Turbo was ideal for this application.”
