The subconscious mind is an organic computer. It is that part of the mind that has a permanent memory, where nothing can ever be forgotten. The subconscious mind holds the sum total of every experience, idea and thought we have ever had including dreams. We are the sum total of all of our thoughts, ideas, perceptions and impressions based on our experience.
There is one thing about the subconscious mind that most people are not aware of; it cannot judge. It is incapable of judgement or analysis. If for any reason a suggestion gets into the subconscious mind, the subconscious does not scrutinise it. It gets straight to work, using all of its strength and might to bring this new suggestion into reality. Just like any other computer, once the software has been programmed, the computer goes straight ahead does what it's programmed to do. The subconscious works the same way.
It stands to reason then, that if things aren't going well for a particular individual, it's simply a matter of re-programming that individual's subconscious computer with the right ideas and concepts! And this is true, except that the subconscious mind has a special protector to prevent any uncomfortable or harmful suggestions from finding their way into the subconscious. This protective barrier called the “critical faculty” is a bit like an anti-virus program on a computer. It won't allow anything that it's uncomfortable with to get through to the subconscious mind, and as this part of the mind has already been programmed, it will only let more of the same type of “comfortable”
This critical faculty performs an important function. If it wasn't there, the subconscious would be open to almost all suggestions, good and bad. A problem occurs when the critical faculty allows a bad suggestion into the subconscious because it is comfortable with it at the time that it's suggested, and only later does it realise that that it was a bad choice. Smoking is a good example of this. Many people start smoking because they want to “fit in” with a certain group of people. They want to belong. Teenagers are particularly susceptible as they are at a time in their lives where they are preparing to leave the security of their parent's homes and become independent. You may be unaware of it, but to feel secure is the single most important mental need for humans. Believe it or not, “fitting in” and being part of a group is very important to humans, and this is often a good enough reason for some individuals to feel comfortable about breathing smoke into their lungs! It's only later on in life that the individual realises that it wasn't such a good idea, and that the individual becomes uncomfortable with this idea. By then it's a habit, and one that's addictive!
It would seem logical then, to think that all the individual needs to do is simply re-program their thinking. This thinking is correct, except that the critical faculty is now uncomfortable with this positive idea and rejects it outright! Some people try to change habits using will power. Will power is a part of the conscious mind, and as soon as the weaker conscious mind becomes a little distracted, the subconscious mind programmed with the negative suggestion takes over, re-establishing the negative programming. The individual starts smoking again, and will continue to do so, until the new positive idea is internalised. This can only happen if the critical faculty is bypassed, and the new idea established in the subconscious.
This is exactly why hypnosis works! Hypnosis is the process of bypassing the critical faculty, and the establishment of acceptable suggestions. Very simply, and effectively, hypnosis overcomes the filtering effect of the critical faculty, and suggestions are allowed to flow into the subconscious mind allowing for a new program in the consciousness.
It's also important to note that even though the critical faculty has been bypassed in hypnosis, the subconscious can never forget anything. For example, the subconscious mind can remember every time you have ever burnt yourself in your entire life. If you are told to touch something that’s hot while you are in hypnosis, the subconscious does not need to think about, or analyse this suggestion. It already knows that it’s a bad idea and the critical faculty is reinstated for that piece of information and as such the suggestion is rejected.
Hypnosis is a one hundred percent consent state. People that don't want to be hypnotised won't be. People in hypnosis won't accept any suggestions they don't want to. People in hypnosis won't offer up any information they don't want to. Hypnosis is safe, easy and effective.
