The summer camp will take place at Montessori American School’s campus, located at 3604 Bonita Rd., Chula Vista, CA 91910. The school is well known for its attractive indoor-outdoor learning areas, in which air conditioned classrooms open up to stimulating gardens and a well-equipped playground for children to explore. As part of the comprehensive Montessori program for learning, this year’s summer camp will provide children with a large selection of learning experiences and creative activities.
“Last year was the first year of our summer camp program, and it was an overwhelming success!” says Edith Gruener, principal of Montessori American.
The 2012 summer camp provided children with a schedule of fun activities for each day of the week, such as:
• Arts and crafts
• Water play
• Science projects
• Sports and outdoor activities
• Games and contests
• Spanish lessons
• Story times
In addition, children were invited to participate in themed days, such as “Pajama Day”, “Wacky Day”, “Crazy Hair Day”, and “Backwards Day”. The camp’s unique activity schedule creatively combined fun and education, and allowed children to enjoy the summer by keeping their minds and bodies active.
Edith adds, “We’ve created an entirely new program for this summer camp, which will incorporate a variety of the most popular activities from last year, along with some creative, new activities and themes. Our goal is to provide children with an unforgettable summer experience. The kids love our themed camp, enjoy the opportunity to make new friends, and have a blast! All of this takes place within the traditional Montessori environment.”
The traditional Montessori environment is a nurturing one. It incorporates Montessori philosophies, such as multi-aged grouping based on periods of development, and encourages them to develop a sense of self and community. This summer’s program is set to include activities and learning experiences that are in line with this tradition.
