National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month March 2013

“Colorectal cancer (commonly referred to as colon cancer) is the third most common cancer for both men and women in the country” said Gary Siemons, MD FACS, FASCRS and managing partner of Colon & Rectal Surgical Associates based in Voorhees, NJ. “Colon Cancer screening should be a top priority as the population ages. 90% of cases are detected in those 50 years old and up.  We are heavily involved in promoting awareness in March and plan to participate in specific events and activities to support local and  national efforts.”

Volunteers from both the Voorhees office and the office in Turnersville, NJ  will participate as “Team Centennial” for the “Get your rear in gear” 10k, 5k run 2 mile walk on March 17, 2013 at the Please Touch Museum in Philadelphia.    Donations on behalf of our supporters will be made for the cause.  In addition, we will be doing “Dress in Blue” Fridays to promote awareness in the practice offices during the month of March.  Each member of the office team will be wearing blue on Fridays in an effort to further increase awareness to our patients.

New initiatives will debut shortly that will make access to screening colonoscopies as easy and simple as it can be.  “The earlier the detection the better chance of a cure”, said Dr. Eytan Irwin,  spearheading the innovative  Open Access Program “This March make colon cancer screening a top-of-mind priority.   At least 50% of colon cancer deaths could be prevented with regular screening and early detection”.
