2013 Falls of the Ohio Summer Day Camps
Young Explorer Day Camps – Students explore the different habitats found at the Falls of the Ohio State Park and exhibits within the Interpretive Center. Using hands-on educational activities, students learn about science and history, including fossils, nature, native people, plants, aquatic life, and more. Camps are for grades 4-6 from 8:30-11:30 a.m.

Schedule:    June 3-7, fee $125          June 24-28, fee $125          July 23-26, fee $100
June 17-21, fee $125          July 1-5, fee $125

Teen Archaeologist Day Camp – This “career camp” is for children ages 11-15 who are interested in exploring the work of an archaeologist. Students discover how archaeologists learn about past cultures and societies by studying human artifacts left by these earlier peoples. Activities at the Interpretive Center will be led by members of the Falls of the Ohio Archaeological Society and archaeologist Anne Bader.  On Saturday, a parent or guardian must transport the child to the archaeology digging site and stay with the child. Families are welcome to watch the morning excavation and bring lunch. After lunch we will enjoy a special "Stratigrapic" dessert and the campers will each present an example of their newly acquired, archaeology related skills.

Fee: $125 – July 11-13, Thursday and Friday, 9:00 to 3:00p.m. and Saturday 9:00a.m. to 2:00p.m.

Young Paleontologist Camp – This "career camp" is for children and their parent or guardian fascinated with fossils who will examine the life and live the life of a paleontologist. Led by Falls of the Ohio State Park paleontologist Alan Goldstein, students age 12 -16 will discover how paleontologists learn about the history of life on Earth by studying fossils (the remains or traces of organisms such as plants and animals that lived in the past). A three day immersion into paleontology, this camp is geared for children (age 12 - 16) accompanied by a parent or grandparent. Between July 16 - 18 (9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.), participants will experience the life of a paleontologist - everything from field collecting and cleaning fossils to studying and photography to publishing a camp project on the Falls of the Ohio web site. Two off-site collecting trips are scheduled, and during these field collecting, participants will be able to keep what they find. Because of the depth of this camp, participants must meet these criteria:

1) Children are between 12 - 16 years old as of July 1.

2) Parent, grandparent or legal guardian will agree to actively participate with the child for the duration of the camp.

3) Child must have a interest in fossils for at least 2 years prior to this camp.

4) Prefer that child has a career goal in paleontology and/or has their own fossil collection. Priority will be given to first-time participants. Limit to 10 child / adult pairs. As you might gather, this "career camp" is not geared for those without a serious interest in fossils!

The child/adult’s registration form must include a hand-written paragraph explaining why the child wants to attend. Fee: $150 -- July 16-18, Tuesday-Thursday, 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.

Day camps are sponsored by The Falls of the Ohio Foundation and State Park Interpretive Center.
