Feb. 25, 2013 - PRLog -- (Lexington, KY – February 11, 2013) —The Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America, Kentucky Chapter will be hosting its third annual Take Steps Be Heard for Crohn’s and Colitis fundraising walk on Saturday May 11, 2013 (Coldstream Park and Legacy Trail). To kick this event off the foundation will be hosting a Take Steps Kick-Off & Recognition Party on Saturday March 23rd at Tates Creek Christian Church.

The foundation welcomes patients, family members, caregivers and supporters living with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis to join us as we recognize top teams and fundraisers from 2012 while introducing new teams for 2013. And meet Lexington’s Honored Hero Bart Denham at this event. “Bart is helping the rest of the IBD community realize it’s ok to come out and put a face on this often silent diseases,” Leadership Board President Cheryl Portman says. This party will be a fun and festive afternoon to get everyone excited about the walk and the impact they are having on the community.

“We realize without the support of our patients and volunteers we would not be able to host this event,” notes Jenny Silberisen, Director of the CCFA Chapter in Kentucky. CCFA is focused on research, education and supportive services for people suffering with these chronic illnesses. Over 80% of all money raised goes directly to research. “And we are currently funding over $766,000 worth of research at the University of Kentucky,” Silberisen states.

“There are over 20,000 noted cases of IBD in Kentucky, we are here to help these patients and provide a reliable place to turn to for support and education,” states Silberisen, “We also focus on educating the community about these often invisible digestive disease, often time you cannot physically tell a patient has something wrong with them.”

Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are chronic digestive disorders of the intestines. These illnesses are collectively known as inflammatory bowel diseases, or IBD, because many of their symptoms and complications are similar. It is estimated that some 1.4 million Americans suffer from IBD, with approximately 30,000 new cases diagnosed each year.

CCFA offers a network of volunteer-led support groups throughout the country to ensure people with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis do not feel isolated or alone. Support groups encourage discussion but also host speakers and provide other resources to help those with IBD lead healthier lives.
