“We tried to get away from our laptops for a bit and focus on playing physical instruments,”
Scenery specializes in eclectic songs and Humdrum is no exception. Lead single, “Crashing Down” features crackling percussion mimicking a world falling apart while “Kinderen”
The lyrics focus on memories of the past, forgotten ambitions and time wasted. “My dreams sadly, just ain’t what they used to be,” Blades sings on “My Grimey Dreams”. “I have left all the tall tales / Start to think this is all for real,” Harris sings on Left All. Dreams and the imperfection of our memories play a key role in the music. The instrumental song, “Mirage” echoes barely remembered vocal fragments and repeating melodies over distant sounding percussion.
Most of the songs on Humdrum were recorded for RPM Challenge 2012 where the goal is to record an entire album in one month.
