The Restraint Control Module (RCM) takes information from the front crash sensors, front outboard safety belt buckle switches, driver-seat track position, and passenger seat weight sensor, and then uses that data to determine how the front air bags will deploy, based on the passengers size, weight, seat position, and even seat belt usage.
The airbags themselves are another excellent safety feature. The seat-mounted side airbags are made to deploy lower in the pelvic area, and they also use a new venting technology that releases a certain amount of pressure based on the size of the passenger.
The tunnel vent airbag lines up with the shoulder of the passenger, and the gas stays inside the vent for the larger occupants, and vents out of the airbag for the smaller ones.
The driver side airbag uses a curve-shape tether system to create a pocket that helps lessen impact the airbag would have on the drivers chest and ribs in the event of a head-on collision. At the same time this goes off, so does the driver’s knee airbag.
