“How do you help your four-year-old understand that heaven is an amazing place where she will feel a love she has never felt before when all she wants is to be with her mommy, daddy, and brothers, and the rest of her family and friends? With each passing day, I feel she is slipping farther and farther away from me. Before I know it, she could be gone from here.  I know in my heart that she will be in an amazing place, but it doesn’t help me from already missing her. I pray that God will help me find a way to help her understand and to comfort her”.

It was this passage in A Journey to Heaven that affected me the most and that seems to capture the entire theme of the book. These powerful words by Tammy Brodowski Mott reveal a sacrificial and selfless mother as she longs for peace for both her ailing daughter and her family. A Journey to Heaven is unique from other memoirs in that it chronicles Emmy Mott’s illness from the grim diagnosis to the aftermath of her passing. Compiled over a year’s time, Tammy relates the details of Emmy’s illness through personal journal entries, complete with vivid details and memorable events. This type of narration allows the reader to feel a stronger sense of involvement and empathy in the Mott family’s trying journey. It is clear from the written accounts of neighbors and supporters that are included in the book that Emmy’s short life had a profound effect not only on those who were blessed to know her, but also on those who simply heard her story.

Tammy’s father, Bruce Brodowski, author of My Father, My Son; The Dad I Never Knew, and How to Heal your Childhood Emotional Wounds with God’s Love, also joined with her in writing this book. Perhaps the most moving aspect of the book is that despite the tragic circumstances of Emmy’s sudden illness, the Mott family’s faith never wavers. Although there are extended times of exhaustion, confusion, and despair over the course of Emmy’s struggle, the overwhelming feeling that Tammy continually expresses in her writing is joy; joy to experience each dwindling day with her daughter to the absolute fullest. Certainly, this book will minister to those families who have also lost loved ones, but it will also genuinely bless anyone who reads it.

Testimonies from friends and even people all over the country are included at the end of the book, reiterating how much of an impact Emmy’s short life had on others, even if they only knew her through pictures and stories. Although Emmy did experience a terrible disease and her family suffered emotionally alongside her, the silver lining is in the evidence that none of it was done in vain. A Journey to Heaven reveals the hopeful healing of Emmy’s family and the stirring testimonies of those who renewed their faith in God from having been touched by Emmy’s experience. Although not yet a mother, I was extremely blessed by reading A Journey to Heaven; its unique and tender story will surely touch your heart as well.

Emmy Mott brought joy to her family and everyone who knew this little angel. Then the unimaginable struck. The rare childhood brain stem cancer DIPG came crashing in on her life. What was a mother to do?

That's the crisis of Tammy Brodowski Mott, mother and author of the new book, A Journey to Heaven, A Daughter’s Short Life Gives a Family Lessons in Love and Miracles, published by Carolinas Ecumenical Healing Ministries.

The doctors gave four year old Emmy eight weeks to live. God had other plans. Her story touched the hearts of thousands of people. Many turned to Christ in faith. This is the story of Emmy Mott’s journey. A Journey to Heaven

To take time to cherish the things in their lives that are most important. Emmy taught us so much about God's love. May the legacy of Emmy be that her story will change people’s lives.”
