David will be discussing the properties of modern concretes and show why particle packing and rheology of concrete in the plastic state can influence long term structural behaviour in concrete assets.
The presentation will also include numerous examples of non-structural cracks in concrete and explain why they occur. It will outline the key issues the industry faces and how past mistakes can be avoided in the future.
David will present the case for pre-contract choice of aggregates, cement binders, curing methods, formwork striking times, early temperature control and good concreting practices.
The Future
The presentation will conclude by looking at the advantages of using significantly less Ordinary Portland Cement and less reinforcing steel whilst still achieving high durability and maintenance-
