Get Ready for Disability Pride Philadelphia 2013

Feb. 19, 2013 - PRLog -- Disability Pride is a worldwide movement that celebrates acceptance, diversity, and the accomplishments of all people with disabilities. The overall mission is to encourage people with disabilities to love and accept themselves and to educate the general public on disabilities. It is a day filled with celebration and pride.

This year, Disability Pride Philadelphia will celebrate The Supreme Court’s Olmstead Decision which gave people with disabilities the legal right to live independently in their communities on June 22nd 1999. At the March 4th fundraiser there will be a brief presentation on The Olmstead Decision and on Disability Pride 2012 followed by a variety of dynamic performances from talent within the disability community.

The first of these performers and evening headliner is the UK act, Sign Dance Collective. Sign Dance Collective is made up of David Bower, known for his role in Four Weddings and a Funeral, Cuban dancer Isolte Avila, and Italian / British Actress Francesca Osimani. Sign Dance Collective has toured worldwide and performed at The 2012 London Festival during the 2012 Olympic Games. Singer, Johnny Crescendo, known as the Bob Dylan of the disability movement, will also perform. Johnny has become a legend in his own right through his song writing and activism efforts. Great Neck Band, comprised of singer/songwriter Anomie Fatale and Jesse Draham, will share their talent as well. Great Neck Band, whose music is meant for disabled outreach, has performed at Philadelphia’s Legendary Dobbs and was featured in The Sunday Inquirer in December of 2012.  

In 2012 the first annual Disability Pride Philadelphia brought over 2200 people from across the nation to The National Constitution Center and Liberty Bell. It was an inspiring and festive day for everyone involved. This year Disability Pride Philadelphia will take place on June 22nd in Franklin Square Park. Judging from the previous year, 2013 is going to be even more successful!
