PRLog - Feb. 19, 2013 - Author Deborah Hopkinson, who recently received two American Library Association awards for her nonfiction book, Titanic: Voices from the Disaster, is celebrating the release of her new book, Knit Your Bit, with a blog tour the week of February 21, 2013.  Blog Tours allow authors/illustrators, students, educators and book lovers to connect “virtually” through interviews on websites, podcasts, blog sites and on-line radio shows.  The book received positive reviews from Kirkus Reviews, Horn Book and Publisher’s Weekly, which noted, ”Hopkinson again gracefully mines history with this story highlighting a patriotic civilian initiative during WWI…”

The idea for Knit Your Bit came to Hopkinson through seeing a historic photo of Honolulu firemen knitting during World War One.  “As I researched, I realized that this effort to knit for American soldiers was widespread, from sheep on the White House lawn to boys and girls knitting in Seattle classrooms,” said Hopkinson, who also serves as vice president for advancement at Pacific Northwest College of Art.  “While this is a light-hearted fictional story, people continue to do Knit Your Bit projects today.  And I think kids will love seeing the historical photos on the endpapers.”

About Knit Your Bit
ISBN 039925241X, Publisher:  Putnam
Mikey’s dad has left home to fight overseas during World War I, and Mikey wants to do something BIG to help. When his teacher suggests that the class participate in a knitting bee in Central Park to knit clothing for the troops, Mikey and his friends roll their eyes—knitting is for girls! But when the girls turn it into a competition, the boys just have to meet the challenge. Based on a real “Knit-In” event at Central Park in 1918, Knit Your Bit shows readers that making a lasting contribution is as easy as trying something new!
