Feb. 19, 2013 - PRLog -- DEARBORN, Mich, — Bryce Davis, a 4th year manufacturing engineering student at Texas State University-San Marcos has been selected a College Edition nominee, by the National Engineers Week Foundation (NEWF), one of 37 promising engineering students nominated by 15 engineering organizations from the United States and across the world. Bryce, will graduate in 2013 thanks in part to scholarship funding provided by the SME Education Foundation (SME-EF) who nominated him.

“Bryce Davis is a critical thinker, problem-solver and innovator,” says Bart A. Aslin, CEO, SME Education Foundation. “We were happy to provide him with the scholarships he needed to help him on his way. He is driven to excel in an industry that needs him, and will be handsomely compensated for all his efforts.”

Last fall, Bryce worked with a company to develop a rooftop wind turbine, and prepare the final design for mass production. “It was part of my senior design project,” says Bryce, “and the pinnacle of my engineering experience to-date. I had to use not only my engineering knowledge, but also my knowledge of supply chain management, project management, and economic engineering analysis to bring that project to a successful launch. I was somewhat saddened when we wrapped it up and am really looking forward to my next engineering challenge.”

Bryce is a tenacious student. He pursued a degree in physics and chemistry at Centenary College of Louisiana from 1996 to 2000. Now in his 4th year at Texas State University-San Marcos, he maintains a 3.6 GPA while pursuing a degree in Manufacturing Engineering. From 2000-2010, Bryce worked at Dell Inc. a systems expert, program and content developer, and technical writer creating learning material used by DCSE technicians for certification testing and field repairs, including self-assessment and certification tests. In 2010 he joined Apple, Inc. as a home-based advisor, providing IOS support.

Bryce’s university activities include membership in the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME Chapter 147 (http://www.sme.org/Tertiary.aspx?id=14585)) serving as the Chapter’s Public Relations Officer, and involvement with his fraternity, Tau Kappa Epsilon, as its Sergeant at Arms, Educator and Vice President. Involved in his community, he supports Habitat for Humanity. His professional memberships include: American Foundry Society, Engineering Society of America; Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME); Foundry Educational Association, and Golden Key.

He acknowledges SME as having enriched his college experience. Whether organizing fund-raising events, participating in its philanthropic activities, or an in-depth factory tour, he says being around other engineers and engineering students inspired him to further his involvement in the field. Bryce also found that students who take the time to join professional organizations and participate in their activities are likely to be more motivated and driven. He is involved with his SME Chapter and their promotion of National Engineers Week activities.  

Says Bryce, “I’d like to say that engineering is the practical application of the arts and sciences. Have an amazing idea for a sculpture? An engineer can help you birth your idea into a reality. You want a bridge to span a canyon? Engineers are there to help. Engineering isn’t just about math and science, it’s about approaching problems from different angles, breaking a large problem down to smaller pieces, and working on those pieces in creative ways. This engineering mindset can be applied to just about any facet of life.”

The SME Education Foundation supports major advanced manufacturing initiatives including those outlined in the National Strategic Plan for Advanced Manufacturing (http://www.whitehouse.gov/sites/default/files/microsites/...) issued by the Office of the President. Two important objectives outlined in the study are integral to the Foundation’s PRIME (http://www.smeef.org/programs/detail/prime) (Partnership Response in Manufacturing Education) program. (1) to expand the number of workers who have the skills needed by a growing advanced manufactur­ing sector and make the education and training system more responsive to the demand for skills, and (2) to create and support national and regional public-private, government-industry-academic partnerships to accelerate investment in and deployment of advanced manufacturing technologies.

SME Education Foundation Scholarships:
Since 1998, the SME Education Foundation has provided over $6.5 million in scholarships and $1.6 million in awards through its various scholarship programs. In 2012, over 208 students across the country received in excess of $521,000 in scholarships allowing them to continue to pursue their education and career dreams. The Foundation awards scholarships to graduating high school seniors, current undergraduates and masters or doctoral degree students pursing degrees in manufacturing and related fields at two-year and four-year colleges. 2013/2014 Scholarship Application deadline: February 1, 2013.
