Brooklyn Cake Shops To Review Safety Practices of Ingredient Manufacturers

The FDA has recently proposed a new rule which will require food manufacturers to be more accountable for their processing practices. Duet Bakery, Brooklyn cakes bakery,  will be taking the initiative and doing their own research into the safety practices of the food companies which they regularly deal with.  

The new regulations are part of the Food and Drug Administration’s Food Safety Modernization Act.  these new guidelines will require manufacturers to outline a food safety plan, preventative controls, monitoring plans, analysis procedures, and a recall plan.

According to former director of the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, “FDA has set a high bar with this proposed rule...Food companies will need to be fully prepared.”  

The public can weigh in on this new measure in the Federal Register until May 16, but it has been recommended by experts in the field that companies need to start acting now.   If they were to wait until the last minute, they may feel up against the wall whenever the time comes and the FDA is there reviewing their practices.  The more efficient and up to code these manufacturing are operating under, the less stress this rule change will be.  

All records, from the manufacturing process to monitoring records, are fair game for FDA inspection.  The FDA no longer has to base their observation on what they see during the day of an inspection, but rather is able to look at the company as a whole, not just what they saw on that day but any day.  

A major problem is that manufactures are aware that the FDA with its limited funding may have a difficult time enforcing this rule change.  This may make companies feel like they can skirt the law and continue with less than good safety practices.  

Duet Bakery hopes to set the bar for other Brooklyn cakes shops by taking the initiative and begin inquiring about their own vendor’s food processing practices.  Although Duet makes Brooklyn birthday cakes fresh in the bakery, the ingredients that go into those cakes come from outside food processors.  Duet will be looking into the practices and procedures used at the companies and inquire about their plans to adhere to the new FDA guidelines.  If they find that a company has practices below our high standards, they will be finding another company to fill the bill.  

They believe that if the FDA cannot spot check all of these different food manufactures, small businesses can do their part to ensure the safety of the food they serve.  If big food manufacturers are aware that this is an issue that the businesses they sell to are concerned with, they will comply with new standards in order to keep their business.

These new rules should be common sense to consumers and food manufacturing companies, but with the recent scares in the food industry people want to see these rules in place.
