Feb. 17, 2013 - PRLog -- The number of Americans with untreated periodontitis is increasing, which prompted the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry (IALD) to declare February as the Gum Disease Awareness Month.

The goal of the organization is to raise awareness about the health risks of untreated periodontitis. Some conditions linked to the disease are heart disease, stroke, some cancers and stillbirth.

To spread awareness, the institute has set up Facebook and Twitter pages where they will disseminate educational resources, facts and treatment information. Moreover, governors from nineteen states issued official proclamations to support the month’s observances, making IALD’s dental program the first to grab statewide attention.

The dental community highly supports the Gum Disease Awareness Month. “This is a positive step towards increased awareness about periodontitis risks and the treatments available for those suffering from it,” Dr. Joseph Tartagni, a West Haven and Milford CT dentist, stated.
