Mag Chloride / magnesium chloride ice melters – turns out are not very safe

Mag Chloride is not safe on concrete as previously thought, causing scaling and spalling

Feb. 16, 2013 - PRLog -- Now that magnesium chloride has been shown to alter and damage concrete as the deicer permeates the surface, products such as (CMA or Happy Paws ice melter) will prove to be more economical to use and better for the ecology of our planet.

CMA is 100% solid calcium magnesium acetate, a formula which will not harm concrete surfaces, the environment, grass and other vegetation, lakes and streams, and is safe for pets with sensitive paws or those that might ingest some of the deicer on the ground. This formula has shown great results on new concrete, sidewalks, driveways, bridges parking ramps (concrete should be cured 28 days) without the harmful effects of magnesium chloride products and salt which have been most frequently used in the past. CMA can be used effectively in commercial and home settings in temperatures from around 0 F and up, and can be used in conjunction with salt to stretch your budget. Also available in liquid form known as Clean Sweep, which when used as an anti-icer, before a snow event, it would cost approximately ¼ of the price of the solid granular product.

Many ice melters on the market today are using mag chloride (MgCl2) with claims to the safety to concrete, and pets. They also claim to be salt free, which is misleading, as mag chloride is a salt, it's just not sodium chloride (commonly known as table salt).
