The Next-Generation Cadillac XTS Will Share a Platform With the Opel Insignia

While it might not be next year, development has already begun on a brand new platform that will be shared with another car under the General Motors umbrella: the Opel Insignia. The new platform will probably see production around the end of this decade, so next-generation technology and manufacturing are expected. The platform may also be shared with the Buick Regal. All of these vehicles are similarly sized luxury sedans.  

It may be surprising to some that the Cadillac XTS is already getting set for a remodel, since it only just arrived on the scene this year. The XTS replaced the STS, and is slightly smaller than that car. What isn’t surprising for a luxury manufacturer like Cadillac is the devotion of many years of research and development before bringing a car to market. It isn’t uncommon for an automaker to begin development of next generation vehicles as soon as the current ones hit the market, while making evolutionary changes to the current versions every year.

Opel, a German automaker that has been fully owned by General Motors since 1931, shares a great deal of technology with current GM vehicles. The current Buick Regal and Opel Insignia share much of the same technology. In the coming years, a next-generation Opel Corsa and a new Opel Antara, which will use the GM Delta II platform, will debut.

The current 2013 Cadillac XTS (http://www.motorwerkscadillac.com/new-inventory/index.htm...) has impressed drivers with its refined road manners and advanced technology features. Under the hood, it has a 3.6L V6 engine that generates 304 hp; this engine is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. It’s available in either front- or all-wheel drive configurations.
