Some family owned businesses are content with the current state of their company and do not wish to take risks to improve their value. In other cases, they can be even more effective than an outside distribution system in selling their product because they understand the company’s culture and want to continue to build on their past success. There comes a time when it is essential to expand beyond your local farmer’s market. “We recently had our first serious attempt at major distribution” said Michael Boutte of Mickey’s Momma’s LLC. “We approached Whole Foods Markets Local Urban Area Foragers Kimberly Albright (Los Angeles area) and Dwight Detter (Orange County/San Diego area) with Mickey’s Momma’s Sexy Homemade BBQ Sauce.  Kimberly said she liked the Lemon and Pineapple BBQ sauce and wanted to try the Teriyaki and Peppercorn flavor. She also agreed that we had a great story and that our sauce was original enough to be placed on their shelves, but there were only 2 problems.  First our label would have to be configured to conform to Whole Foods, California and FDA standards and second, Whole Foods shelves were flushed with BBQ sauces”.

“We visited several Whole Foods markets including the El Segundo, Wilshire Blvd and Valencia stores and found that there were over 30 different kinds BBQ sauces on their shelves.  The first issue would be an easy fix, we would first have to list every ingredient found in our sauce instead of the generic monikers and next the nutritional values would require disclosure.  The second matter is more complicated. After we’ve fixed the label to make it more distribution and store friendly, we would need to get the product on to their shelf.  In order get on their shelves we will need overwhelming public opinion, support and a little luck. This is where we are asking all our customers and fans for your help.  If you have purchased or tried Mickey’s Momma’s Sexy BBQ sauce at a store, festival, farmers market or purchased sauce online and you believe Whole Foods should carry our product in their stores; you should contact Whole Foods and let them know.

Mickey’s Momma’s LLC sauce wants to expand their distribution to grocery store chains. “It has not been hard for us to get meetings with Los Angeles area foragers,” Boutte said. “I believe we will have to show them how well our product sales and how the product could benefit their bottom line.  Without a wide retail base other than special events, local gourmet retail stores, word of mouth and an internet presence, it will be difficult to achieve the nationwide aspirations of our company” he says.  “We’ve relied mainly on grassroots campaigning which include our website, Facebook “LISH”, Twitter and YouTube videos featuring happy fans who really like Mickey’s Momma’s Sexy BBQ sauce to get our product marketed”. Mickey’s Momma’s LLC currently sales two flavors and styles of barbecue sauce: Lemon and Pineapple and also Teriyaki and Peppercorn. Most of their retail customers are in California. “We still sell many bottles out of the trunk of our cars and to co-workers at our regular jobs” he said. “We hit it out of the park with the Teriyaki and Peppercorn sauce. There is something about a moderately spicy hot BBQ sauce that is extremely sexy” he said with a laugh, adding it makes a “Very sexy sloppy Joe recipe”.

Follow Mickey’s Momma’s Sexy Gourmet BBQ sauce as it makes its journey to the shelves of major grocery stores near you. If you love great BBQ, be sure to use your power as a consumer and contact Whole Foods and ask them to put something sexy on their shelves and that they can start with Mickey’s Momma’s Sexy BBQ Gourmet sauce.  Kimberly Albright can be reached at kimberly.albright@wholefoods.com or dwight.detter@wholefoods.com.
