During two workshops, Chanin Ballance, CEO, Via Learning, and Nate Jolly, Senior Instructional Designer/Strategist, Via Learning, will co-present and analyze several interactive demos of recent successful game-based training and micro learning programs in action, as well as discuss learning theory, delivery options, technological considerations and traps to avoid when planning a training strategy.
• Planning Game-Based Learning: Tuesday, February 19, 2013, 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m.
Games have become a mainstream tool for learning, but even more global businesses are now seriously considering the option. This is due to the increase in the ability to provide cost-effective complexity and visual appeal within games. Additionally, research has shown that gaming, in the right context, can be just as, if not more, effective than traditional eLearning. Attendees will learn how games can improve problem-solving, creativity, risk assessment and risk taking, when to use game-based learning and when not to, and how to best design a game-based program.
• Why and How to Design Micro Learning: Tuesday, February 19, 2013, 10:45 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. Today, learning strategy and content must be designed to take advantage of evolving learning behavior. Learning should get to the heart of things quickly and be easily accessible. If a learner’s working memory is full, the excess information will disappear. If the content isn’t available on demand, the learner will postpone. In this session, attendees will gain insights on how much information learners can digest and process with their working memory, and why some learning can end up as unproductive, negative and even antagonistic. Attendees will also see how to design effective learning by using chunks to help facilitate the brain’s ability to absorb information more efficiently, thus improving the learning process.
