All-Natural Pittsburgh Market Wins Coveted National Award

Marty’s Market “Touching” Customers with Latest Technology

Pittsburgh, PA
--- Regina Koetters, owner of Marty’s Market in Pittsburgh’s Strip District was in the spotlight on February 11, 2013 at the National Grocers Association (NGA) annual convention in Las Vegas, NV, where she took home national recognition for Progressive Grocer magazine’s Outstanding Independent Award. The Outstanding Independents Awards annually recognize excellence from among the ranks of innovative and successful independents grocers, and the wholesalers that collaborate with them. Between successfully launching a cutting edge touchscreen technology at all cash registers and ordering systems, and delivering on their home grown philosophy of providing ‘food made of food’ through locally sourced and all natural suppliers, Marty’s Market stood out among like sized competitors across the nation.

Hungry for solutions, Koetters was searching for effective ways to serve the customers of her all-natural market, café and coffee bar. It was the summer of 2012 and iPad adoption had reached a new level of saturation by consumers. But for small retailers, hand-held touch-screen technology was still not widely utilized. Marty’s Market, known for its commitment to sourcing only the highest quality all-natural food products, chose to be a pilot for San Francisco-based Revel Systems’ Point Of Sale (POS) system designed specifically for supermarkets and grocery stores. The rest, as they say, is history.

"We've seen so many great benefits of the Revel POS system in the time we've had it live in our store," said Lawrence Capozzolo, who heads up IT for Marty's Market. "With its now familiar intuitive touchscreen interface, the iPad makes it so simple for our employees to learn so that we don't have to spend days training them.”

That means happier staff, faster service, and a tangible sense that Marty’s is providing the highest quality in all of its interactions with customers, not just in fresh local produce, or grass-fed beef. And patrons of Marty’s agree. According to market regular and Freelance Producer/Director Anita Harnish, “The market is my go-to grocery for those items I need on the way home from work.  I love that the produce is local and that Regina knows all her suppliers.”

Ultimately, the customer comes first. However, while the idea running retail operations seven days a week from an iPad may seem daunting, says Lisa Falzone, CEO and co-founder of Revel Systems,  "Revel Systems is about building a platform for all commerce to interact, and our Grocery POS system has been in development for over a year to provide our customers with the features they really want and need to run their businesses."

And run it they will at Marty’s. Although now a nationally recognized operation, Koetters continues to foster an appetite for success through the (surprisingly) soft touch of technology. Now that the touch screen POS system is providing solutions for staff, beginning in March Marty’s will be using it to pilot a new program specifically for customers by collaborating with LoyalTree, a new Mobile-to-POS rewards system.

Integrating the Mobile-to-POS system with consumer smart phone technology, Marty’s will not have to rely on the front of house staff to redeem a promotional or earned consumer discount through the POS system – the system will do it automatically.  So, not only does the consumer get to earn and cash in loyalty rewards, in addition, by automatically handling the redemption and delivery of the discount, Marty’s will be assured of complete accuracy while customers like Anita get all the attention and all the rewards they deserve for their continued patronage.

In a market cafe where you can sit at the counter eating soup from scratch while watching the Pastry Chef concoct the next day’s decadent delectable, what sweet rewards they will be.
