Apply Now for HPM College Scholarships

Feb. 13, 2013 - PRLog -- HPM has offered the annual Barney S. Fujimoto Memorial Scholarships, which recognize achievement and promote excellence, for more than 30 years now. “My father (Barney) died at the fairly young age of 50,” explains his son and current Chairman of the Board, Bobby Fujimoto. “Since he was one of the builders of this company and strongly believed in higher education, back in the early 1970’s we thought it would be more than appropriate to establish a scholarship in his memory.”

He says the company always hopes to see applications from every high school on the island, even the smallest ones.

Last year’s scholarship recipients included: Makana Agcaoili of Pahoa High School who is studying genetic engineering at UH Manoa, Kaitlin Tavares of Kamehameha Schools also attending UH Manoa majoring in chemistry and Kendra Fujioka, a Hilo High School graduate, studying biology at UH Hilo.

Applications are available from high school counselors or online at www.hpmhawaii.com/about/scholarship/.  Students may submit a completed application, résumé, photo and academic record postmarked by April 1, 2013 to: Marketing Department, HPM Building Supply, 380 Kanoelehua Avenue, Hilo, HI 96720.  Online applications must be received by midnight April 1, 2013.

Since starting out 91 years ago as a small, family-owned Hilo lumber mill, HPM Building Supply—now 100-percent employee-owned—has grown to include three full-service building supply centers and four lumber yards on the Big Island. The company manufactures pre-engineered trusses, wall panels, metal roofing and pre-hung doors, and treats its own lumber. From its Honolulu facility HPM also provides lumber, building supplies and custom metal roofing to Oahu and Maui. On Kauai, HPM’s Kauai Lumber provides the island with lumber, building materials, roofing and packaged homes.
