About: Don’t Walk By

Since January 2009, the “Don’t Walk By” campaign has mobilized more than 5,600 volunteers who have engaged nearly 4,000 homeless men, women and children on the streets of Manhattan.  More than 1,700 homeless individuals have returned to a church for a meal and other services, and nearly 400 have left the streets that very night.

“Don’t Walk By” is a cooperative effort of six faith-based organizations: The Bowery Mission, Betel of America, Hope For New York, New York City Relief, New York City Rescue Mission, and Street Life Ministries.  The strategy is based on the Biblical story of the Good Samaritan, a person who did not to walk by a man in trouble, but chose to use his resources to get the man to a place of safety, community and help.  By pooling their resources, these six organizations have mobilized this first-of-its-kind campaign for five consecutive winters.  www.dontwalkby.org
