15TH ANNUAL DC INDEPENDENT FILM FESTIVAL FILLS SCHEDULE WITH "OPEN SPACES" Washington, D.C. (February 10, 2013) – The DC Independent Film Festival (DCIFF) has announced its official 2013 selections. The festival, which is in its 15th year, opens on March 6th and runs through March 10th, during which time it will premiere 55 feature-length and short films, mainly shown at its primary venue - the US Navy Memorial (701 Pennsylvania Ave, NW, Washington, DC, 20004). DCIFF will present the world premiere of Meth Head - starring Lukas Haas (Inception, Brick), Wilson Cruz (My So-Called Life, Party Monster), and Blake Berris (Days of Our Lives) - at a Red Carpet event on Thursday, March 7. The film, which follows a man’s descent into addiction, will be followed the next morning by a panel discussion with director Jane Clark, actors from the film and representatives from regional drug addiction support programs. The festival will open on Tuesday, March 5 with a screening of the bicycling-related documentaries Los Ginger Ninjas and The New Woman: Annie 'Londonderry' Kopchovsky, held in conjunction with the Washington Area Bicyclist Association on the final day of the National Bike Summit. DCIFF, together with the Voice of America will commemorate International Women’s Day on Friday, March 8 with a free afternoon screening of We Women Warriors, a film about three indigenous women in Colombia who use nonviolent resistance against that nation’s warring factions. The theme of this year’s festival is “Open Spaces”, drawing attention to the role that the space immediately surrounding us - our local community - plays in both the creation and appreciation of art and ideas. “Local needs are represented in open space,” says DCIFF Executive Director Deirdre Evans-Pritchard. “The space that we can see and hear and feel around us holds our sense of community. Film can capture and reflect that sense.” Also in keeping with the festival’s theme, we will be hosting an “open mic” event collecting oral histories from festival-goers about their “Going to the Movies” experience. Throughout its history, DCIFF has prided itself on the fact that many of the key figures from the films - writers, directors, actors, issue experts, and documentary subjects - are able to be present at the festival and to discuss the matters raised by their films in the panel discussions, Q&A sessions, master classes, and seminars that are part of the festival. 2013 is no exception, as many of the directors, actors, and documentary subjects are planning to attend the festival. Evans-Pritchard says: “The festival serves both filmmakers and the general public by not only presenting documentary and issue-based films, but also by bringing the filmmakers and other experts together with the public for a discussion that broadens the understanding of both.” Alongside its diverse slate of films, DCIFF will continue its tradition of supporting the art of filmmaking by holding workshops on: Optioning Books; Cinematography; In addition to these seminars and workshops, we are pleased to announce that both Blake Berris (Meth Head, Days of Our Lives) and Q'orianka Kilcher (Shouting Secrets, The New World) will be conducting master classes for actors. The festival also sponsors a "Summit on the Hill" (Thursday, March 7th from 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM; Congressional Offices, Room TBD) hosted by the Congressional Entertainment Caucus: a unique opportunity for filmmakers, media, producers, and other industry professionals to share their concerns and their expert perspectives with Congressional policymakers. DCIFF is about more than just film, featuring a nightly happy hour with live musical entertainment by local bands and a chance to mingle with filmmakers, actors, and fellow festival-goers.
