Follow on Google News | Prem Tinsulanonda International School launches new IB-accredited Diploma in HospitalityPrem Tinsulanonda International School (PTIS) in Chiang Mai, Thailand introduces a brand-new vocationally focused course for students in Grades 11 and 12, the IBCC Diploma in Hospitality.
"The program is really the best of both worlds," says program director Michael Galligan. "It combines the framework, recognition and accountability of the IB with a dynamic and powerful career-related focus of particular interest to the student — in this case, hotel and restaurant management." The announcement comes after having successfully launched the Diploma in Sport two years ago, which will graduate its first cohort of students in June 2013. The IBCC Diploma in Hospitality will attract students, both current students and those who join the school specifically for the new program, students who have a passion for and eventually see themselves in a career in the hospitality industry. Although specific courses have yet to be finalised, the Diploma in Hospitality is likely to include coursework such as: customer service, supervisory skills, financial control, marketing and promotions, food and drinks service, principles of nutrition, organising special events, accommodation operations, environment and sustainability in hospitality, and front office operations. In addition to career-specific coursework, students will also complete a language development component, an Approaches to Learning course, service learning activities (already required of all graduates of Prem) and a culminating Reflective Project as part of their IB diploma. Both of Prem’s specialised diploma offerings are part of the International Baccalaureate Career-related Certificate (IBCC). Although there are thousands of schools around the world offering one or more of the IB programs, Prem is one of only about fifty schools worldwide – most in the UK and USA – authorised to offer the IBCC program. Prem is also the first school in SE Asia to offer its students all four of the prestigious IB programs. “The IBCC option actually increases student access to the highly-sought after IB Diploma Program by offering a vocational focus for students,” says Galligan. “It is specially-suited for mature, career-minded students who know what they want after school and have already committed to that area of study. Our Diploma in Hospitality and Diploma in Sport fill that need.” End
