Feb. 10, 2013 - PRLog -- Help Wanted: Employment Help Finding A Job - 3 Mistakes You Must Avoid.

Is there anything that causes more anxiety than looking for a job?

Probably not. But you can avoid some common problems that knock candidates out of the running early in the process. Avoid these common mistakes:

1) Don't know enough about the company and what they do.
Thanks to access to the internet there is absolutely no reason not to be up to date on what your prospective employer does! Be able to answer these questions:

- What is the company's expertise?
- How much have they grown?
- Are there any other locations?
- How would you fit into their goals?
- Do you know their mission statement and goals?

2) Keep away from exaggeration or talking about what you don't know (don't lie).
Resist the temptation to try to give facts, figures, or data on topics that you don't know about. Instead make sure that they are clear about your strengths and confess your weakness. But let them know that you plan on getting better educated about the topic.

3) Be prepared for the tough questions in advance.
There are certain questions that you should expect from any job interview. Yes, some of them are designed to 'test' your response. But don't let it throw you. Observing how you react under pressure helps employers determine if you will be right for their company.

Here are a few questions to consider:

- Why do you want to work here? (or Why should I hire you?)
- Why did you leave your last job?
- What is your biggest weakness?
- What is your strongest asset?
- How do you react to pressure?
- What didn't you like about your last employer? (Be careful here).
- If a fellow employee is doing something unethical (like stealing) what would you do?

Remember, ultimately your employer wants to know that they won't go through the time, energy, and expense of hiring someone who is not a good fit.

If you have the opportunity to sit down with someone who already works for the company (maybe take them to lunch) get a feel for the company's culture.

Also:

- Make sure that your resume is strong.
- Be clear about your short and 5 year goals.
- Keep away from negative talk about anything! (Employer, employees, work environment, etc.)
- Be yourself and be honest!

Good Luck!
