Urunji Child-Care Trust, a local non-profit in Malawi has scaled up poverty alleviation programmes that target orphans and vulnerable children. This was announced at the recent event where they distributed pillowcase dresses for girls and britches (shorts) for boys. This is a partnership between Urunji Child-Care Trust and Little Dresses for Africa (LDfA). Urunji Child-Care Trust (http://www.urunjichildcare.org) is currently running programmes that are targeting over 1600 children including feeding, sponsorship, distribution of mosquito nets and vitamin supplements.

Giving a Hand-Up not a Hand-Out

According to Ian the Executive Director of Urunji Child-Care Trust, these initiatives are not meant to create dependency as many would think but rather empower children especially girls so that they attend school. As we clothe the children, we meet their basic needs that will enable them attend school and get out of the circle of poverty.

The need is great and the resources are few

Urunji Child-Care Trust is calling upon all well-wishers to join hands with them to provide more for these children. As we are in the rain season, we need to scale-up distribution of mosquito nets to protect the children from malaria.
