Ski resort of Cauterets breaks world record for snow

Feb. 10, 2013 - PRLog -- The ski resort of Cauterets, in the French Pyrenees, has today more snow than any other ski resort in the world, according to Le Figaro. It has beaten the record held until now by Mammoth Mountain in the USA, with a huge 5 metres of snow on the ground. This is the result of it snowing every day since January 13.

Cauterets has always received an ample supply of snow even in years when other resorts in the region have been less fortunate, but the quantity of snow this year has surprised everyone. France Meteo's forecasts suggest that the snow will continue falling in the days ahead, with almost one metre extra likely to be added by the middle of next week.

However, this amount of snow has its drawbacks. Some ski slopes has been forced to close for safety reasons and sixty people are currently working to clear the resort of the excess. With all this snow, it is possible that the resort will be able to stay open until mid-April. Less well known than the Alps for its skiing, the Pyrenees may be the place to go this year for those who wish to ski later in the season. Cauterets is less than an hour from the airport of Lourdes/Tarbes, which can be reached by flights from London Stansted and is also within striking distance of Toulouse, Pau and Biarritz.
