Teenagers with Myasthenia Gravis (MG) Benefit from Innovative Online Video Support Group.

The Rachel Esther Myasthenia Gravis Foundation and Sunrise Counseling Center launch the nation's first video support group for teenagers afflicted with Myasthenia Gravis.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - Feb. 8, 2013 - The Rachel Esther Myasthenia Gravis Foundation, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit foundation and resource for MG afflicted teens and their families, and Sunrise Counseling Center have launched the nation’s first video-based online support group for teens with  Myasthenia Gravis.

Myasthenia Gravis (MG) is a neuromuscular autoimmune disease that can be baffling because it is not easily diagnosed. MG symptoms vary between individuals and require individualized treatment.

“We are thrilled to offer this free program to teens with MG” said Cynthia Mandelbaum, President of the Foundation. “It is important that young people who are diagnosed with any chronic disease have a strong support system,” she said, “our program provides a safe environment for teens with MG to connect with other teens under the guidance of a supportive coach.”

A traditional support group is inaccessible to most teenagers with MG because they are few in number and live throughout the country; the video-based solution is an innovative way of solving this challenge. The supportive coach is a licensed social worker provided by Sunrise Counseling Center.

The online support group uses Internet video to facilitate monthly online meetings; teenagers may register to participate at no cost. The groups are small in number and arranged by age range in recognition of the differences between early and late teens. Teens and parents interested in joining the group can learn more at the Foundation’s website, below.

“Fundraising is an ongoing challenge for most non-profit organizations” she said, “it is especially so for a foundation like ours, which is here to support teens and children of a lesser-known disease. Our goal for 2013 is to raise $10,000 for the continued operation of the group."
