It is a rare elementary or middle school that can afford to have a dedicated and qualified arts instructor on its staff.  Commonly, teachers in the lower to middle grade levels are required to instruct all subjects, including skills such as art, whether they have confidence in their artistic abilities or not – and most don’t. As a result, according to the Richmond Hill artist and cartoonist Jeff Wakefield, most art classes become little more than craft sessions or “creative recess”.   Mr. Wakefield’s new e-books, “How to Draw” and “Really Easy Cartooning”, now available at teachers pay teachers dot com/store/cyrus-wakefield-inc, reveal the secret to success in teaching art basics.

“Most people look, but they don’t see,” says Mr. Wakefield.  “The ‘secret’ to drawing, though, is hidden in plain sight.” In “How to Draw”, the basics are explained and illustrated in an easy to follow and often humorous progression of steps that can be tied into other core subjects.  The emphasis is on the basics – to look and see, then draw.

“Every game has its rules and if you haven’t been taught the rules you haven’t been taught the game.  That’s what both my books, “How to Draw” and “Really Easy Cartooning” do – show you the ‘rules’, such as they are – so that they can be passed on to the students.”

About Jeff Wakefield

Originally from Pennsylvania, long time Richmond Hill, Ontario, resident Jeff Wakefield has been a professional artist for nearly 45 years.  Over that time he has worked as a syndicated newspaper comic strip artist, editorial cartoonist, illustrator and product designer.  His characters, Amy, Tim and the Cat, from his comic strip, “Bubblegummers”, became the basis for the world’s leading brand of children’s footwear, sold in more than forty countries, and appearing in dozens of animated commercials, as well as comic books and story books published in multiple languages.

Mr. Wakefield admits to having been inspired by a visiting artist who came to his Grade Two class at Center School, in New Canaan, Connecticut, back in 1952, but he took no formal training in the subject.  He has, however, been a visiting artist in schools, himself, since 1975.  “You learn to draw by drawing,” he says.  “I show you where to begin.”
