First, it should be known that there are lots of different certifications for accountants. Some of the more common ones are Certified Public Accountants (CPA) and Certified Managerial Accountants (CMA). There are more that revolve around internal auditing like the Certified Internal Auditor (CIA). I can’t attest to how difficult the CMA or CIA exams are but the CPA exam is extremely tough. If you want to go that route you should expect to spend at least 1 – 2 years studying straight for the test and shell out some cash for a good CPA prep review.

The two key bookkeeping certifications are the Certified Bookkeepers (CB) and the Certified Public Bookkeepers (CPB). I have hired and worked with certified bookkeepers before and they definitely know the basics. If you are looking to do standard bookkeeping (opposed to online bookkeeping or cloud accounting) then these certifications might be a great choice for you.

The problem I have seen with all of these certifications are that they don’t focus on current realities and current technologies. For instance, most CPAs that I know or work with are not able to set up their own remote server. They don’t know how to focus on the reality that small business and individual clients want convenience and fast turnarounds. Our focus should be providing value to the client. This requires a paradigm shift from what the current accounting courses and certifications offer. That is why we are teaching our own course (https://www.hometeamaccounting.com/certified-professional...) and issuing our own designation in order to take our profession to the next level, online. If you’re ready to do something different and inline with our times, try it here (https://www.hometeamaccounting.com/certified-professional-cloud-accountant/).
