Using Letters, New Book Expresses Love, Captures Essence of New Orleans

Feb. 2, 2013 - PRLog -- NEW ORLEANS -- Love Letters from New Orleans is a photographic and typographic statement that celebrates the spirit and culture of New Orleans, one letter at a time. Spearheaded by Nessim Higson of I Am Always Hungry studio, Love Letters casts the city in both a positive and provocative light. The project is a collaboration of creators who hold New Orleans close to their hearts and aim to reach a deeper and more diverse audience by exposing aspects and nuances of the city that may have been forgotten.

Either born, raised or having lived for a time in the city of New Orleans, the three co-creators of this book, Ness Higson (designer), Daymon Gardner (photographer) and Anthony Vachris (writer) believe that New Orleans is a unique city with a culture all its own, needing to be shared with the world. Together, they decided to create a book that distills the culture of New Orleans in 26 concepts – one for each letter of the alphabet.

The book was created for both New Orleans locals and tourists alike. That's partially the reason the book took over three years to finish: the creators re-evaluated many spreads and tabled five finished concepts in favor of topics that felt more universally appealing.

Higson explains, "We created the book in an effort to celebrate the people, history, and culture of New Orleans, a city we all love and believe to be one of the most unique in the world. We reached out to several publishers and were consistently told the subject matter was too regional. We are confident, however, that the culture of New Orleans is a universally appealing topic that many people can, should, and will enjoy. That is why we have decided to self publish, raising the necessary funds through Kickstarter."

To date, supporters have pledged over $16,000 to fund Higson's Kickstarter campaign with 18 days of the effort remaining. In exchange for financial contributions, supporters receive "rewards" such as artwork, apparel, a hardback copy of the book, and a digital version of Love Letters in the form of an iPad app. Once the campaign has concluded, the book will go to print and will be available later in the year.
