Feb. 1, 2013 - PRLog -- The Society for Nutrition and Behavior (SNEB) applauds USDA for releasing the “Smart Snacks in School” (http://www.fns.usda.gov/cga/020113-snacks.pdf) to improve nutrition standards for foods and beverages sold in schools. USDA’s proposal establishing healthier nutritional standards for foods and drinks often sold in vending machines or in a la carte lines marks a significant step toward giving our nation’s school children better, more nutritious options. The rule is an outgrowth of the Healthy and Hunger Free Kids Act adopted in 2010.

SNEB has long awaited this proposal and looks forward to reviewing and commenting on it, so that the final rule has strong standards and is implemented a soon as possible.  Representing the unique professional interests of nutrition educators in the United States and worldwide, SNEB is dedicated to promoting effective nutrition education and healthy behavior through research, policy and practice. The landmark Healthy and Hunger Free Kids Act and these regulations help advance our promotion of those goals.
