Feb. 1, 2013 - PRLog -- Little Italy Association (LIA)’s Little Italy Parking District announced a host of new measures as part of the 2013 strategic plan that will effectively increase available parking spaces in Little Italy while bringing attention to alternative ways to get to the popular neighborhood.

New programs in 2013 have been driven through LIA’s working relationships with the City of San Diego, MTS, area developers, local businesses and residents to create a united effort in three core areas to ease parking frustrations:
1.    Create more surface street parking by increasing the available parking space footprint with perpendicular spaces and reviewing and mitigating employee and resident use.
2.    Develop an employee parking program to shift parking out of the main Little Italy corridor and free up spaces for visitors.
3.    Open public parking spaces in new and existing developments by working with building owners and tenants to allow public parking.
4.    Educate Little Italy Association members about available programs, resources and alternative ways of transportation.

These programs are visible throughout the Little Italy Parking District map including perpendicular parking spaces on W. Elm Street, W. Fir Street and Juniper Streets, which opened up 26 new spaces.  There are two Car2Go designated spaces in Little Italy located at the southeast corner of Kettner and West Cedar. The valet program is well into effect at $7 per vehicle running from 6 to 11 p.m. on select days. Valet can be found at three cross sections of India Street - W. Cedar Street, W. Date Street and W. Fir Street - from Thursday to Saturday along with the cross section of India and W. Kamia Street on Fridays and Saturdays. There are also three open lots on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. that offer first 2 hours parking free, followed by a $2 hourly rate. These lots can be found at W.Fir and State Street, Union and W. Date Street and W.Juniper and India Street.

To make the destination even easier to get to, and get around, Little Italy Association launched its own app available for iphone and android.  Free to download, “Little Italy, San Diego” offers resources including an interactive parking map highlighting free, discounted and available parking lots and valet pick-up/drop-off locations.
