The Dallas Institute's Cowen Center for Education Presents "2013 - The Year of the Teacher"

PRLog (Press Release) - Jan. 31, 2013 - In celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Sue Rose Summer Institute for Teachers, the Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture’s Louise and Donald Cowan Center for Education will proclaim 2013 to be the “Year of the Teacher” on Saturday, February 9, in an evening that will highlight the Cowans’ enduring vision of teaching and learning that continues to deepen and transform teachers, principals, and superintendents today.

The Cowan Center for Education will recognize this important achievement along with alumni of the Sue Rose Summer Institute for Teachers spanning three decades, educators, supporters of the Humanities, and special guests at the Montgomery Arts Theatre at Booker T Washington High School, 6:30 – 8:30PM.  Ninety-six year old Dr. Louise S. Cowan, co-founder of the Dallas Institute and visionary creator of the Summer Institute, will give the keynote address. The program will also include the dedication of the Sue Rose memorial plaque, paying homage to the civic leader who believed so passionately in the educational work of the Dallas Institute.

“Declaring 2013 the ‘Year of the Teacher’ as part of our 30-year celebration is testament to our teachers’ essential role in culture,” said Dr. Claudia Allums, director of the Cowan Center for Education at the Dallas Institute. “The teacher is the central feature in education, but differently than the way we currently believe. As the central feature in education, teachers should be respected and inspired to rise to their high calling through developing intellectually in their own disciplines and through sharpening their skills. By elevating our teachers’ hearts and minds, by reminding them of the truth of their calling, we will empower them to do the real work of teaching. Inspiring and challenging teachers will give us what we want in our classrooms—examples of passionate learning that can inspire students to learn, too.”
