Jan. 31, 2013 - PRLog -- Havana, IL  –  February is National Heart Month, with special efforts conducted nationally by the American Heart Association as well as their state chapters. In addition, Mason District Hospital is using Heart Month as an opportunity to educate the public about risk factors and information for healthy living and healthy hearts.

“Risk factors such as obesity, diabetes, poor diet, physical inactivity and excessive use of alcohol are contributing factors to heart disease with 1 in 4 adults dying every 40 seconds from coronary events”, notes Harry Wolin, Administrator and CEO of Mason District Hospital, “We hope our efforts during Heart Month help alert our community to these risks, and easy ways to reduce them.”

In addition to the public promotion of risk factors, Mason District Hospital is continuing it’s fan-favorite “Decorate a Duck Contest” for local businesses in support of Heart Month. From Feb. 18-22nd, area businesses will have their customized ducks on display at the Havana County Market store. This year’s theme is “Mini But Mighty. Fighting Heart Disease Starts with Small Changes.” The public is encouraged to come out and vote for their favorite entry!

“We found this to be a great way to involve the community and businesses in promoting heart-healthy messages, and we have been extremely pleased with the interest from local businesses to be a part of this program.” comments James Dearing, Director of Community Health and Wellness.
