PRLog (Press Release) - Jan. 31, 2013 - Toyota of Merrillville is pleased to continue to offer one of the market's safest brands. As a continuation of their dedication to safety, Toyota Motor Sales USA is donating 10,000 child's car seats to families who may be unable to afford a proper one. The initiative is a joint effort with the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center

The group vice president of National Philanthropy and the Toyota USA Foundation at Toyota Motor North America, Patricia Salas Pineda, addressed the purpose of the project.  “Tragically, so many [child] deaths and injuries could be avoided through the proper use of child car seats and seat belts. We are pleased to be working with the visionary medical experts at Cincinnati Children’s to help empower parents and caregivers to make an even bigger difference in protecting young passengers, while also bringing thousands of new child car seats to families in need.”

Every year, 50% of the children killed in car crashes are not secured in car seats when they should be. On top of that, three quarters of the families using car seats are not using them correctly. These factors contribute to the fact that the leading cause of death in children 12 years and younger is automobile crashes. By providing families with proper child seats, Toyota hopes to reduce the annual causality rate.

A wide range of Toyota vehicles, including the Corolla, Highlander, and the Sienna minivan are equipped with the LATCH system, allowing parents to easily strap their children's car seats in to the rear seats of the vehicle. While a car seat properly installed with a seat belt is just as safe, LATCH makes the process easier and is just as effective. LATCH uses both upper and lower anchors to snuggly secure the car seat.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, one of the nations most trusted sources of automotive safety information, has rated over 10 Toyota vehicles as 2013 Top Safety Picks. These include four door models like the Yaris, Corolla, and Avalon, crossover SUVs like the 4Runner, Highlander, and Venza, and the Sienna minivan. Besides a system of advanced airbags, Toyota safety systems often include vehicle stability control, electronic brake distribution, and brake assist.
