SPADY MUSEUM's 'Ride & Remember' Troller Tour to Include a Visit to Home/Gallery of Local Artist

Delray Beach, Fla. – January 2013 – In celebration of Women’s History Month in March, the Spady Cultural Heritage Museum is customizing its popular “Ride & Remember” Trolley Tour with an inside look at the historic home of local artist Lois Brezinski, a tour of her garden oasis and an additional stop at her store/gallery at the landmark Colony Hotel in downtown Delray Beach.

Combining the history of women’s impact upon area, Brezinski’s home and work, and the elegant hotel, the Spady Museum hopes to entice new and returning Trolley Tour riders onto a special, narrated journey on Saturday, March 9. A lifetime artist and painter of Florida’s seascapes and natural beauty, Brezinski lives in an historic home in the Del-Ida Historical District, the oldest platted neighborhood in the city. Built in 1925, her home features original plaster crown moldings and wood flooring from the 1920s, as well as a sunny fireplace with architectural detailing. Tour riders will gain special access to her living room, which is not typically included on other garden tours. Brezinski helped found the Delray Beach Historical Preservation Trust and has a real passion for maintaining architectural landmarks.

“Few homes so preserved and well-maintained. Most have been gutted and totally redone, but this one has a lot of historic charm on the inside,” she said. “People are fascinated by the textured stucco on the wall. (Addison) Mizner had his craftsmen live in these neighborhoods in Delray Beach, and they perfected the techniques that they used in the big homes on these little, smaller homes.”

Trolley tour riders will also enjoy a tour of Brezinski’s manicured gardens and patio area, which features native plants and flowers, before stopping at The Colony Hotel to take in her garden-inspired gallery artwork and receive a special gift in the store. Inspired by Florida sand, sea and beaches, Brezinski’s artwork includes hand-painted glassware, note cards, ceramic tiles, paintings and jewelry.

Other women’s history shared on the tour includes the contributions of the Ladies Home Improvement Association, which spearheaded the city’s first downtown sidewalk, library and cemetery. The Association managed the move of the buried from “high ground” throughout the city to one centralized location. While several streets and structures throughout the city are named for male pioneers, the female leaders made many decisions, which affect Delray Beach to this day.

“The influences of women can be seen throughout the city, from the historical structures to the gardens,” said Museum Director Charlene Jones. “The Williams Cottage, which is located in the West Settlers’ District on the Spady Museum Complex, was home to one of the black, pioneering midwives.”
About the “Ride & Remember” Trolley Tour: Normally held on the second Saturday of each month, from 10 a.m. to noon, the tour takes riders through the city’s five historic districts. Riders will tour the Spady Cultural Heritage Museum, Old School Square and select historic sites for a closer look at the fascinating history of Delray Beach. Upcoming Tour Dates are April 13, May 11, June 8, July 13, August 10 and September 14.
